Supercar Sunday: BMW M1; birth of an iconic badge

New Delhi: Much before BMW’s M badge became a nameplate for high-performing saloon cars and SUVs, there was the car that started it for the German brand, the BMW M1. It was quite radical, rare and outrageous of anything BMW had ever made, and this is what we will be talking about in our Supercar Sunday today. The M1 was one of their first and only mid-engined supercar made by the brand.  At the time, BMW was known for making just refined executive carsand the M1 was quite a surprise for many. Made in the late 1970s, the M1 was developed as a homologation special for motorsport. However, delays and changing racing regulations made it instead a road-legal car and even in this iteration, it was raw speed and power.  BMW M1 powertrain In terms of power, the BMW M1 came with a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-six engine, known internally as the M88. Unlike the other engine made by BMW at the time, this engine block was for racing, and it made 277 hp and 330 Nm of torque in...

Honda’s new localised electric scooter is under development

New Delhi: It isn’t news that Honda’s big play in the Indian electric vehicle market didn’t hit the mark. In spite the big following of the “Activa” nameplate, both the Activa e: and the QC1 struggled to find their footing. Both of the models were based on international models that were re-engineered for the Indian market. After a period of sluggish sales, production for these two models reportedly ground to a halt several months ago. Still, the Japanese giant are not giving up, and instead, they are regrouping for a more calculated second attempt as reported by Autocar India . Honda Activa e: and QC1 drawbacks The Activa e is the only scooter in the country to come with a factory-supported battery-swapping network. However, the problem was that this said network is far too small. Which means you have to be located close to a swapping station in order to buy one because there’s no provision for home charging. Furthermore, having the batteries under the seat left little...

Royal Enfield have filed patent for Flying Flea S6 in India

New Delhi: Royal Enfield have patented the design of their Flying Flea S6 scramble in India. This marks the brand’s second electric model under the Flying Flea sub-brand, following the C6 roadster, which is scheduled to launch in the coming year. Both Flying Flea C6 and S6 made their debut at EICMA in Milan and share the same platform, though each has been tailored for different purposes. The C6 is more road-focused riding, while the S6 is designed as the more off-roading, adventure-ready option. It comes with a 19-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel, both with spoked rims and dual-purpose rubber. The suspension setup is also made for off-roading purposes, with a long-travel USD front fork that replaces the C6’s much more distinctive girder-style arrangement. The other highlights in the design elements include a long, enduro-style seat instead of the C6’s solo saddle, along with a finned magnesium battery casing. The technical details are still absent, Royal Enfield had...

Subaru teases a new STI model; could it be for production?

New Delhi: It has been a repeated cycle of Subaru teasing a WRX STI, and this time, Subaru have shown a little clip of this on their Japanese social media platforms. It hints at the return of the legendary performance badge before the debut in 2026. Whilst this has been seen before, there are reasons to be hopeful about it. In the short clip, there are insights as to what could be coming, with the opening being a tight shot of the STI logo. This is followed by the blue, WRX-shaped sedan or a hatchback speeding through snowy forest back roads. You can even hear the Subaru boxer engine, though the brand is silent about the technical details of the block. The teaser ends with a “Coming Soon” and a date of January 9th, 2026. That lines up with the Tokyo Auto Salon, Japan’s biggest performance-car event in the world and a place where the Subaru will feel at home to reintroduce their most iconic nameplates. The speculation is that this is probably just another STI Performance Pack and...

From January 2026, all new two-wheelers to come with ABS and dual helmets

New Delhi: In a big move aimed at improving road safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that all new two-wheelers sold from January 2026 will have an anti-lock braking system(ABS), irrespective of the engine capacity. Further, the mandate states that it will be necessary for dealers to provide two BIS-certified helmets for each new vehicle, one for the rider and one for the pillion passenger. This decision, when enforced from next month, is expected to address a vital cause for road fatalities for two-wheeler riders. According a data from the government, a huge number of two-wheeler accidents involve brake-related skidding and head injuries, which the new rules will target to reduce. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had noted back in June that making ABS compulsory, along with mandating the supply of two helmets with two-wheelers, is part of the government’s larger push to improve safety on road safety. Honda patent new steering assist technology for better motorcycle safety

New Delhi: Honda have filed a new patent showcasing a steering-assist system for motorcycles that would let bikes actively intervene and adjust their own direction in emergency scenarios. This would be a huge step from how rider aids have worked so far in two-wheelers. Motorcycles today are quite heavily dependent on electronic aids like ABS, traction control, wheelie control and much more. All these are made to keep the bike stable, but they are still dependent on rider inputs. Honda’s proposed system takes a step further by intervening at the steering itself when it detects a potential collision. According to the patent filing, the system will use a camera and blind spot monitoring to identify hazards and potential collisions. On detecting a hazard or risk, the system will enable steering assistance to push the bike away from the danger. It is quite like the lane-keeping or collision-avoiding tools in cars, adapted for the two-wheelers. Honda have given two scenarios for the...
