Tension erupted in Madurai as several pro-Hindu organisations clashed with Tamil Nadu police over the Karthigai Deepam festival at the Subramanya Swamy temple. The confrontation occurred after temple authorities reportedly failed to light the ceremonial lamp on the ancient Deepathoon by 6 p.m. yesterday, despite a clear directive from the Tamil Nadu High Court.
The High Court order followed petitions, including one from Hindu Makkal Katchi activist Rama Ravikumar, seeking permission to light the lamp. Following the temples non-compliance, supporters from four Hindu groups gathered in large numbers, with some attempting to scale Thiruparankundram hill to light the Deepa Stambam.
This led to scuffles with police personnel who were present to prevent the ascent, citing a Section 144 prohibitory order. Police warned that even CISF officers, who were meant to protect petitioners, would face arrest if they proceeded.
