A planned township near Mumbai, called Sukoon Empire, is at the centre of a significant controversy. Promoted as offering a "halal lifestyle" exclusively for Muslim families, the Karjat project has drawn criticism for allegedly promoting religious segregation.

A promotional video featuring a woman in a hijab highlighted the project's aim to provide a community environment adhering to halal principles. This has led to accusations of ghettoization from Hindutva groups and online debates regarding the challenges faced by Muslims in accessing housing.

Conversely, some argue the project is a necessary response to systemic discrimination. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), acting on concerns raised by member Priyank Kanoongo, has issued a notice to the Maharashtra government, demanding a detailed report within two weeks on potential human rights violations.
