New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday rejected Bangladesh’s allegations and said that it never allowed its territory to be used against its neighbour. It further called for the need for peaceful general elections in Bangladesh, to be held next year.
“India categorically rejects the assertions made by the interim government of Bangladesh in its press note,” the MEA said in a statement. It added, “India has never allowed its territory to be used for activities inimical to the interests of the friendly people of Bangladesh.”
Notably, Bangladesh is all set to hold its general elections in February. It would be the first general elections in the country since the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina Government in 2024. The former Bangladesh PM was forced to flee Bangladesh following massive protests in the country.
India’s reaction came hours after Bangladesh’s foreign secretary summoned Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, Pranay Verma. It then expressed its concerns over recent statementss former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India.
As per Dhaka, the Bangladesh government also expressed concerns over statements made by some of its former ministers and Awami League leaders staying in India currently. Responding to Bangladesh's allegations, India said it continues to encourage for , fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh.
The Awami League has decided not to contest polls next year, arguing that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus will be unable to conduct the free and fair elections. ““It is now clear that the current occupying authority is entirely biased, and that under their control it is impossible to ensure a fair and normal environment where transparency, neutrality, and the people's will can be reflected,” the party said in a statement earlier this week.
