North Goa Nightclub Fire: 25 Dead, Safety Violations Under Intense Scrutiny
A tragic fire at Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, has claimed 25 lives, with initial reports indicating death by suffocation. Six people were injured, and five remain under treatment. The incident, which occurred late on a Saturday night, has brought to light numerous safety violations and systemic failures.
Police have registered an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, arresting four staff members and filing an FIR against the club owners. Investigations suggest the fire likely originated from fireworks discharged inside the venue, which reportedly had poor ventilation and limited escape routes.
Emergency services faced significant challenges reaching the site due to narrow access roads, hampering rescue efforts. Authorities have confirmed the club lacked proper fire safety permissions, despite continuing operations. This has prompted the Goa government to order a statewide audit of nightclubs and restaurants to identify and address similar violations.
A magistral inquiry is underway to investigate procedural lapses and ensure accountability for those responsible, including club management and officials who granted permissions. The tragedy underscores urgent concerns about safety oversight and regulatory enforcement in Goas entertainment sector.
