PM Modi and British PM Starmer Discuss India-UK Trade Ties in Mumbai
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai, focusing on strengthening India-United Kingdom trade ties. The meeting, taking place at Raj Bhavan, underscored ongoing efforts to finalise a new trade deal set to come into effect next year.
This follows the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed in July during an earlier visit by Prime Minister Modi, which aims to reduce tariffs on goods such as textiles, whiskey, and cars, whilst also enhancing market access for businesses in both nations.
Keir Starmer described his two-day visit as the largest trade mission ever dispatched to India, accompanied by over a hundred leaders from the business, culture, and university sectors.
The FTA, concluded in May after three years of negotiations, is projected to increase bilateral trade between the worlds fifth and sixth largest economies by an additional £25.5 billion by 2040. Both countries are working towards systematically reducing tariffs to facilitate greater access for UK products in Indian markets and Indian products in UK markets.
