Punjab: AAP sarpanch shot dead at wedding function, police on lookout for assailants

Amritsar: In a shocking incident, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Valtoha village sarpanch Jarmal Singh was shot dead during a wedding in Punjab’s Amritsar district on Sunday. The victim was shot dead by two unidentified persons who fled from the spot after committing the crime.
The incident took place when AAP MLA LA Sarwan Singh Dhun was present at the same function. The murder came days after a Kabaddi player cum promoter Rana Balachauria (30) was shot dead in Mohali during a tournament by three assailants. The police have found no connections between two murders.
Sarpanch killed at full public view
Just as in the case of Balachauria, Jarnal Singh was also murdered in full public view. Balachauria was killed just 300 metres away from Sohana police station. According to media reports, Jarmal Singh was attending the marriage of Amarkot’s sarpanch Harjit Singh Serry’s sister when he was attacked.
The accused were dressed in formal suits
The victim was enjoying the function when assailants started spraying bullets at him before fleeing the spot. As per the police, the victim was shot in the head. The accused were reportedly dressed in formal suits. They had also posed as wedding guests and entered the venue, the police added further.
Speaking to ANI, DCP Jagjit Walia said, "This evening, at the Marigold Resort here on the Amritsar bypass, we received information that a shooting had occurred. All our senior officers and teams immediately rushed to the spot.”
Culprits will be apprehended soon: Police
"A person named Jarnail Singh was shot by someone. Our team is fully engaged in investigating this incident. The culprits will be apprehended soon. The victim has passed away... We are using both human intelligence and technical surveillance," he added further. The police are trying to probe all nearby CCTV cameras to find out the assailants.
