Rape, Harassment, and Murder: A Wave of Crimes Against Women Rocks Odisha
Odisha's recent surge in violence against women has sparked widespread outrage and demands for immediate action. Several high-profile cases highlight the alarming trend and the urgent need for improved safety measures and stricter law enforcement.
The most shocking incident occurred in Malkangiri, where a young girl was abducted and subjected to two separate gang-rapes within a single night. Returning home from a friends birthday party with her mother and a friend, she was first assaulted by three men approximately 15 kilometers from town. After managing to escape, she was tragically attacked again by a truck driver. All four perpetrators have been arrested.
Another disturbing case involves a young hockey player from Jajpur, who alleges she was kidnapped and gang-raped by her coach, Sarthak Mohanty, and two of his friends, Sandeep Swain and Sagar Nayak. This incident underscores the vulnerability of women even within seemingly safe environments.
In Balasore, a 20-year-old college student took her own life after self-immolation, citing persistent harassment by a college professor. This tragic event highlights the devastating consequences of unchecked harassment and the need for better support systems for victims.
Adding to the growing list of disturbing cases, Udit Pradhan, the Odisha NSUI Congress student wing president, was arrested for allegedly drugging and raping a 19-year-old engineering student in Bhubaneswar.
