'Snow White's Evil Queen': Haryana woman 'drowns' 6-year-old niece, other girls for being prettier

New Delhi: In the famous story of Snow White, the evil queen became jealous of the protagonist and plotted to murder her, and the mirror tells her that Snow White is more beautiful. Something similar has reportedly happened in Haryana's Panipat, where the police arrested a woman on Wednesday for allegedly murdering her 6-year-old niece due to the bizarre reason that she opposed anyone who looked "more beautiful" than her.

The alleged murder took place on Monday. The accused has been identified as Poonam, who drowned her niece in a water tub when the entire family attended a wedding in Sonipat. The police have said that Poonam had earlier killed three children, including her son, in 2023, who she had also murdered by drowning.

The victim has been identified as Vidhi, who came to Panipat with her family to attend the wedding of a relative. After the family left for the wedding, Vidhi's father was informed that she was missing, and she was found at a relative's storeroom with her head submerged in a water tub. She was declared dead when taken to the hospital, and her father later registered an FIR. The accused, Poonam, was the paternal aunt of the victim.

Police have said that Poonam earlier drowned children out of jealousy and resentment against anyone looking more beautiful than her. The victims are mostly young, pretty girls, and she has confessed to killing four children, her own son, and three girls, by drowning. While she allegedly killed the girls for the above-mentioned reason, she drowned her son to avoid suspicion.
