Supreme Court Mandates CBI Probe into Karur Stampede

The Supreme Court has mandated a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede, an incident that tragically led to 41 fatalities last month. This directive follows a series of petitions calling for an independent probe into the matter.

A three-member committee will oversee the investigation, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi. The committee will also include two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of Inspector General (IG) rank, who must originate from states other than Tamil Nadu.

The CBI is required to submit monthly reports to this monitoring committee. The apex court had previously raised concerns regarding the Madras High Courts decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT), questioning the jurisdiction of a single judge in a case of such national significance, especially when a division bench was already deliberating related matters. The decision underscores the Supreme Courts commitment to a thorough and impartial inquiry into the incident.
