Chennai Book Fair 2026: Free entry, daily timings (Jan 8-21), 1000+ stalls

In a significant move, entry to the fair will be free for all visitors. BAPASI Vice President (Tamil) Nakkeeran Gopal confirmed that facilities such as restrooms, parking, and public rest areas have been improved for greater comfort.

Chennai: The 49th Chennai Book Fair, one of the largest literary festivals in South India, will be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on January 8, 2026, at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam. In a departure from previous editions, this year’s fair will remain open daily—not just on weekends—from 11 AM to 8:30 PM until January 21, offering book lovers a more accessible and expansive 14-day experience.

Announced by R.S. Shanmugam, President of the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), at the Chennai Press Club, the fair will feature over 1,000 stalls with participation from international pavilions—including Malaysia, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Singapore—as well as Indian states such as Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

Key institutions like the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation, the International Institute of Tamil Studies, and the Sahitya Akademi will also showcase their publications.

Literary Programs and Awards

Each evening will feature lectures and discussions with noted scholars and writers. The prestigious Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Porkizhi Award 2026 will be presented across categories including poetry, short story, novel, and drama. The fair will also host competitions for school students and offer reading training sessions to encourage young readers.
