Chennai: In a major push for digital transit, the Chennai Unified Municipal Transport Authority (CUMTA) has launched a groundbreaking "One Rupee Ticket" offer for commuters using the newly introduced Chennai One app. The initiative allows users to travel on city buses, the metro, and suburban trains for just Rs. 1, aiming to promote cashless payments and integrate the city's public transport systems.
The "Chennai One" app, introduced a few weeks ago, serves as a one-stop solution for planning, payment, and managing travel across Chennai's three major transport modes: MTC buses, the Metro, and suburban electric trains. Before its launch, daily commuters had to navigate separate systems to purchase tickets for each service. The app integrates these services, allowing users to plan journeys, make payments, and generate digital tickets all in one place, featuring a simple design, QR code integration, and live tracking facilities.
The special offer is designed to incentivize new users to experience the convenience of digital ticketing. For a short period, commuters can purchase a ticket for any single journey on the network for just Rs. 1, a significant discount compared to regular fares, which can be as high as Rs. 40 for a metro ride from the airport to Wimco Nagar.
To get the Rs. 1 ticket, users must follow these steps:
The offer is valid for one trip per user and cannot be combined with other promotions. Regular fares will apply after the first discounted journey.
The "Chennai One" app has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the public. Since its launch, it has already garnered 5.5 lakh registered users, facilitated 14 lakh journeys, and seen over 8.1 lakh tickets purchased through the platform. The current Rs. 1 offer, which started on November 13, 2025 (Thursday), is expected to further accelerate its adoption and efficient, cashless public transport ecosystem for Chennai.
