Chennai: In response to persistent heavy rainfall lashing coastal and delta districts, district administrations in Cuddalore and Villupuram have declared a holiday for all schools today as a precautionary measure. The decision aims to ensure student safety and mitigate inconveniences caused by waterlogging and ongoing inclement weather. This follows similar holiday announcements for schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal.

Widespread Rainfall and Official Weather Warnings

The Northeast Monsoon has intensified over Tamil Nadu, driven by a low-pressure area in the Southwest Bay of Bengal. This has resulted in widespread rainfall across the state, including Chennai. The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in most places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

A specific heavy rain warning has been issued for several southern and western districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni.

Recorded Downpour in Delta Districts Causes Waterlogging

The delta regions have borne the brunt of the intense rainfall. Heavy rains, measuring up to 16 cm, were recorded in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Thiruvarur districts. The rainfall continued through the night, leading to significant water accumulation in low-lying areas.

Key rainfall data from yesterday includes Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district receiving 16 cm, followed by Kodiyakarai (12.6 cm), Thirukuvalai (11.4 cm), and Nagapattinam and Velankanni (10.5 cm each).
