'They have to take action': Tharoor flays Yunus govt over violence, denounces Hindu man's lynching

Shashi Tharoor strongly condemned the lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, in Bangladesh, urging the Yunus government to take decisive action. He praised peaceful Indian protests over the killing, highlighting the contrast. Tharoor also supported deposed Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina's continued stay in India, emphasising hospitality to a "good friend" while legal aspects are reviewed.

New Delhi: Condemning the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday hoped that the widespread protests in the country would remain peaceful, while pointing to similar demonstrations in India that took place without violence.

He dubbed the killing of the Hindu man -- Dipu Chandra Das -- who was lynched by a mob over blasphemy allegations in Mymensingh in Bangladesh -- as outrageous and completely unwarranted.

'Protests in India are not getting out of hand'

Voicing support for the protests in India led by Hindu groups over Dipu’s killing, the leader said: “I don't think anyone has felt that these protests are getting out of hand. There has been no violence, no lynching and certainly any attempted violence will and should be clamped down upon by our police." He urged the Bangladesh government to do the same.

Taking a swipe at the Muhammad Yunus-led government, Tharoor said mere statements of regret were inadequate, and further action was necessary. “They have to take action because controlling the violence on the streets is their obligation as a government. They need to curb this violence. They need to ensure that the streets are calm again, that people can feel safe again,” he said.

Recently, Yunus had condemned the killing of the Hindu man and said that several arrests had been made in connection with the case. On Tuesday, several Indian cities, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Agartala, Jammu, and Bhopal witnessed protests over Dipu's killing.

'We are being hospitable to a good friend'

Tharoor also backed the government’s decision to allow ousted and deposed Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to remain in India, pointing out that it was a humane move not to expel someone who has been a “good friend” of the country.

He said: “A very small number of people understands the legal issues, the treaty, the obligations of the treaty, and the exceptions within the treaty. I would leave it to the government to do the appropriate consideration. But in the meantime, when we are being hospitable to a good friend.”

Tharoor also said that Hasina should be permitted to stay in India safely until the government has fully examined all aspects.
