UK Families Receive Wrong Bodies Following Air India Crash: DNA Errors Revealed
The Air India Flight 171 crash, which claimed the lives of 260 people on June 12th, has taken a tragically unexpected turn. Beyond the initial devastation, a disturbing revelation has emerged: several families, particularly in the United Kingdom, have received the incorrect remains of their loved ones.
This heartbreaking development highlights significant failings within the disaster management and body identification processes following the crash. The primary responsibility for body identification and DNA matching fell to the government civil hospital in Ahmedabad, India.
Reports indicate that at least two UK families discovered, through independent DNA testing, that they had received the remains of individuals other than their relatives. In one particularly distressing case, a funeral was cancelled after it was determined the coffin contained the wrong body.
Furthermore, it was revealed that, in at least one instance, body parts from more than one victim were inadvertently placed within the same casket. Air India’s role in this tragic incident was limited to transporting the coffins to the UK via Kenyon International, a global emergency services firm.
The airline had no involvement in the initial identification process conducted in Ahmedabad. Despite this, questions regarding Air India's moral responsibility are being raised, given their direct involvement in the transportation of the remains. The Indian government has acknowledged the situation and stated that the identification processes followed established protocols.
However, the MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, issued a statement expressing that they are cooperating with the UK authorities to address the concerns. The revelation has triggered intense scrutiny of disaster management procedures, prompting questions about whether international standards were adequately followed.
