New Delhi: Bangladesh has suspended consular services and visa issuance services at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi until further notice. Explaining the reason behind the same, Bangladesh said the decision was taken due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

The decision was taken following a small demonstration against the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, which led to a strong statement by Dhaka. This even as Bangladesh is unable to stop protests against India in its country.

Tensions increased after Hadi's killing

For the last few days, there have been fresh tensions between India and Bangladesh, following the attack on youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi in Dhaka. While he was initially treated in the capital of Bangladesh, Hadi was shifted to Singapore for further treatment, but succumbed to injuries.

His killing led to widespread protests against India, which further strained relations between both countries. Even Bangladesh’ Interim Government called him a martyr.

India slammed Bangladesh media reports

On Sunday, India responded to reports of a security breach of Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and slammed media organisations in neighbouring country for fake news. It said that on December 20, around 20-25 people had gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission and protested against the killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh.

“We have noted misleading propaganda in sections of the Bangladesh media on the incident," the MEA said. “The fact is that about 20–25 youth gathered in front of the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on 20 December 2025 and raised slogans in protest against the horrendous killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, while also calling for the protection of all minorities in Bangladesh,” it added.
