Dehradun: Uttarakhand is facing harsh winter conditions with fog in the plains and biting cold in the hills. The Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for dense fog and cold wave in six districts, including Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri.
On Thursday morning, Dehradun and nearby areas were covered in dense fog, making travel difficult. Visibility dropped sharply, affecting road, rail, and air services. However, sunshine in the afternoon provided some relief. In the hilly regions, bright sunshine has kept daytime temperatures slightly above normal, but mornings and evenings remain bitterly cold.
Fog has caused daytime temperatures to fall
The plains are in the grip of a severe cold wave. Fog has caused daytime temperatures to fall, leaving residents struggling with the chill. The dry cold is also creating problems due to the lack of rainfall. In remote areas, children and the elderly are facing more difficulties. December has so far remained unusually dry, adding to the discomfort.
Temperature readings show the contrast between hills and plains. On Thursday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 18.0°C and a minimum of 7.8°C. Udham Singh Nagar reported a maximum of 20.2°C and a minimum of 7.2°C. Mukteshwar recorded 19.6°C as the maximum and 4.7°C as the minimum. New Tehri reported 18.0°C maximum and 4.6°C minimum.
Cold wave will intensify in the plains
The Meteorological Department has warned that the cold wave will intensify in the plains. An orange alert has been issued for dense fog and cold day conditions, while a yellow alert remains in effect for several districts.
Western disturbance is expected to become active
Relief may come in the next two to four days. A western disturbance is expected to become active, bringing light rain and snowfall to the mountainous regions. Rainfall is also likely in lower areas. Light rain is possible at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Snowfall is expected in areas above 3,500 meters.
Drivers are urged to use fog lights and avoid speeding
Authorities have advised people to take precautions while traveling in fog-hit areas. Drivers are urged to use fog lights and avoid speeding. Residents are being asked to stay warm and protect themselves from the cold wave.
