Dehradun: The Meteorological Centre in Uttarakhand has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in parts of the plains, especially Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. While most areas of the state will remain dry with partly cloudy skies, the impact of fog is increasing in the plains, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures.

Interestingly, the cold is being felt more in the plains than in the hilly regions. In Udham Singh Nagar, the maximum temperature fell by nearly 6°C, while in Mukteshwar the maximum temperature rose by the same margin.

Light fog in Dehradun and surrounding areas

Rivers, streams, and waterfalls have frozen

In the high Himalayan regions, including Badrinath Dham, Auli, and Niti Valley in Chamoli district, rivers, streams, and waterfalls have frozen due to the dry cold. The lack of snowfall and rain has left the mountains dry, with frost adding to the difficulties of daily life.

Tourist activity has increased

Despite the harsh weather, tourist activity has increased. In the Timber Sain Mahadev caves of Niti Valley, freezing water has formed a natural Shivalinga, attracting large numbers of pilgrims and visitors. Tourist traffic has also risen in Auli, where the cold weather is drawing adventure seekers.

Meanwhile, the dry conditions are affecting medicines and health supplies. In Dehradun, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 200, raising concerns about pollution. Meteorologists warn that fog in the coming days could further deteriorate air quality in the plains.

Caution for travelers in fog‑affected districts

Officials have advised caution for travelers in fog‑affected districts and urged people to prepare for delays in transport. The combination of dense fog in the plains and freezing conditions in the hills highlights the contrasting weather patterns across Uttarakhand this winter.
