New Delhi: Controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing a man washing his face and feet in the Amrit Sarovar at the Golden Temple. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) condemned the act, calling it a violation of the Sikh maryada (code of conduct).

Following the incident, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami ordered a detailed probe and urged visitors to respect the shrine’s maryada. Reacting to the matter, Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that all religions must be respected and that such acts, as seen in the video from Sri Harmandir Sahib, hurt the religious sentiments of many.

According to UNI, the man featured in the video said he carried out the act unintentionally and acknowledged his mistake. He said he had visited the holy shrine with reverence but was unaware of the Golden Temple’s code of conduct. He apologised for the incident and said he would visit Sri Harmandir Sahib in person to seek forgiveness.

Is the video authentic?

Amid the controversy, SGPC Chief Secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan said the committee would conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. He added that the authenticity of the circulated video would also be examined to determine whether it was genuine or fabricated using artificial intelligence.

Mannan also flagged concerns over the presence and role of on-duty sewadars at the time of the incident.
