Both of them had arrived in Tawang via Guwahati in Assam, and were part of a 7-member tourist group.

The police said that the incident happened on Friday afternoon, when one member of the group slipped and fell in the frozen lake. He began to drown and in an attempt to rescue him, Dinu and Mahadev entered the lake. While the tourist who had fallen inside first managed to escape unharmed, his 2 rescuers, namely Dinu and Mahadev were swept away in the icy water of the lake, reported India Today.

Superintendent of Police DW Thongon, said that the local police received information about the accident at around 3 pm. They, along with the Disaster Response Force and the Central agencies, immediately began a rescue operation. The difficult weather conditions and poor visibility affected the rescue operations, but they still managed to recover 1 body from inside the lake on Friday itself.

The rescue operations had to be halted at night.  The next morning, that is Saturday rescue teams once again entered the frozen lake and recovered Mahadev's body.

The body of Dinu has been kept at the Jang Community Health Centre and a post mortem was conducted on Saturday.

Guidelines for tourists

The SP said that the administration had installed boards listing out guidelines for tourists visiting the area. Apart from other advice, tourists have also been asked to not walk on any frozen lakes in the region, including the Sela Lake.

He also said that the district administration had in December itself released an advisory for tourists, asking them not to walk on frozen water bodies. The notification said that this might prove unsafe as the ice was unstable and could not bear human weight.

Sela Lake is a popular tourist spot in Arunachal Pradesh. It is located 13,000 feet above sea level and can be extremely cold during the winter season.
