Srinagar: A terrifying moment was caught on camera Friday morning as a massive landslide tore through the Baramulla stretch of the Srinagar–Baramulla–Uri highway (NH-1), bringing traffic to a complete standstill and sending motorists running for their lives.
The Moment of Impact
Dramatic footage shared by news agency PTI shows the harrowing seconds when huge boulders and massive mounds of soil detached from the mountain, crashing down onto the tarmac. The video captures the chaos as drivers scrambled for cover, narrowly escaping the cascading debris. Officials have confirmed that the highway is currently disrupted as emergency crews assess the damage.
Winter’s fiercest grip: Chilla-e-Kalan
The landslide occurs as the Kashmir Valley is locked in the heart of Chilla-e-Kalan, 40 days of harsh winter. The region is currently facing a triple threat of weather challenges. Clear skies on Thursday night caused temperatures to plummet across the Valley. Visibility has been severely hampered in several areas, complicating travel even on unaffected roads.
Snowfall prediction
While the meteorology department predicts dry weather ahead, the higher reaches, including the popular tourist hubs of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, are already blanketed in fresh snow from Wednesday night.
Despite a sunny morning in Srinagar, the "bone-chilling" reality remains. The summer capital recorded a minimum temperature of 0.1 degrees Celsius, a sharp drop from the 2.2°C recorded the previous night.
