New Delhi: Reproductive health is an important component of women's health with health implications for fertility, regular menstrual cycles, and hormonal health. While genetics and lifestyle have a significant impact on reproductive health, nutrition is another important contributing factor and can bring positive changes. A healthful diet rich in key nutrients can help maintain hormone balance, improve egg quality, and support menstrual health. Dr Kajal Singh, Associate Professor, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, NIIMS Medical College and Hospital, listed the best foods for women's reproductive systems:

  • Leafy Green Vegetables: Spinach, kale, and broccoli are full of folate (Vitamin B9), iron, and antioxidants. Folate is essential for ovulation and plays a vital role in healthy fetal development. Iron is critical for menstruating women who are at risk for anemia, and helps to boost energy levels. Adding greens to your diet will promote the regulation of menstruation and support hormonal balance.
  • Whole grains: Whole grains, such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread, provide complex carbohydrates and fibre, which help regulate blood sugar levels. Stable blood sugar levels are directly related to stable insulin levels, which are important for stable hormones, and we need stable hormones for healthy ovulation. Whole grains are also full of B vitamins that are important for egg health and reducing PMS symptoms.
  • Fruits and Berries: Berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries), oranges, and pomegranates are full of antioxidants, especially vitamin C and polyphenols. These antioxidants help protect reproductive organs from oxidative stress, support a healthy uterine lining, and enhance circulation to the ovaries and uterus.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Nuts, like almonds, walnuts, and seeds, like chia and flax seeds, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, selenium, and zinc - all of which are necessary to improve egg quality, regulate menstrual cycles, and support testosterone and estrogen production. Nuts and seeds are also rich in essential fats that the body needs to produce reproductive hormones naturally.
  • Dairy Products: Low-fat dairy, such as yogurt, cheese, and milk, is a great option to fuel the body with nutrients important for ovulation.
  • Fatty Fish: Oily fish, like salmon, sardines, and mackerel, include omega-3 fatty acids that lower inflammation, support ovulation, and regulate the menstrual cycle. Omega-3 fatty acids offer beneficial fats that enhance blood flow to reproductive organs and help to co-produce hormones.
  • Legumes and Lentils: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas provide healthy sources of protein, iron, and folate, and most importantly for you, the person with a uterus, to ensure you include them in your diet if you have heavy menstrual bleeding and are trying to conceive. Iron plays a crucial role in egg health, and ovulation is essential.
  • Water and Hydration: Water is not a food, but having appropriate hydration is also important for maintaining reproductive health. Water aids in cervical mucus production and helps detoxify the body, which is essential for maintaining hormonal balance.

To maintain reproductive health, as a woman, one should always take a holistic view, and hence, diet should be one of the first places to focus on. Adding a variety of colorful, nutrient-rich foods to your diet can help regulate hormones, increase fertility, and reduce the disruption of your menstrual cycle. A gynaecologist-recommended diet, therefore, should contain greens, whole grains, healthy fats, lean proteins, and antioxidant-rich fruits, to ultimately let your body's reproductive function occur naturally. Daily decisions about what is on your plate can significantly shape your health and wellness in the long term.
