Fritz, last year's finalist, was in top form but ran out of steam in the deciding set when Alcaraz turned on the afterburners.

Both had won their opening group matches, and American Fritz put his Spaniard opponent in a spot of bother when he took the opening set in a tie-break.

Alcaraz fought back in the second set after facing two break points and tnen upped the ante in the deciding set as Fritz's energy began to wane.

The six-time Grand Slam broke 4-2 and sealed his win in in two hours and 48 minutes to inch closer to the year-end number one spot and needs one win to confirm it.

"It was pretty tight, I was struggling more than him in the first set. I wasn't serving well, and I think he was pretty comfortable from the baseline, from everywhere," Alcaraz said.

"I was really relieved after the win because of everything I went through during the match. I wasn't feeling the ball as well as I was in the first round, but I'm really happy that I found a way to come back."

Musetti magic

Musetti looked set to lose as De Minaur served for the match but then fashioned a stunning comeback.

The Italian won the first set after breaking serve at 5-5. De Minaur survived three break points in the second set before capitalising on his first break points of the match at 4-4 to push the contest into the third set.

De Minaur looked in control at 2-0, but Musetti somehow managed to pull off a great escape from the verge of defeat that would have eliminated him from the tournament.
