New Delhi: British Anthony Joshua miraculously escaped a fatal car crash that killed two other passengers in Nigeria on Monday. According to local media reports, the former world heavyweight champion was admitted to a hospital after escaping with minor injuries.

The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotosho, revealed the deadly accident in a post on X. The cause of the fatal crash, which occurred on a major thoroughfare linking Ogun state, a nearby city, to Lagos, the country's economic centre, remains unknown.

However, as per the update, as quoted by BBC, from the Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria, a Lexus Jeep involved in the accident was suspected to be travelling "beyond the legally prescribed speed limit".

They revealed the car lost control during "an overtaking manoeuvre" and crashed into a truck stationed on the side of the road.

In no time, photos of the boxer being evacuated from a wrecked vehicle while he was grimacing in pain went viral on social media.

"BREAKING NEWS: Boxing champion Anthony Joshua has survived a deadly car crash in Nigeria that killed two people. He was a passenger in a Lexus when it reportedly smashed into a truck. This is him being carried out of his vehicle, clearly in agony. But he is said to be OK," English broadcaster Piers Morgan wrote in a post on X.

Joshua's parents reside in Nigeria, where he briefly went to boarding school at the age of 11.

The boxing icon was visiting his homeland after a famous win over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.  Joshua knocked Paul out nine days ago in a highly-hyped bout in Miami. Joshua intended to use the bout to regain sharpness in the ring ahead of a potential rematch with Oleksandr Usyk for the world heavyweight title. Joshua lost his world title to the Ukranian in 2021.

He was also in discussions to fight fellow Briton Tyson Fury in 2026.
