Morgan Rogers bagged a stunning brace as Aston Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 at home in the Premier League on Sunday. Despite not being at their best, Villa managed to secure crucial three points against a United side that had several key players missing. Roger scored on both sides of the two halves to help Villa continue their unbeaten run across competitions.
United were arguably the better team in the first half, but failed to convert their chances. Rogers scored from a sensational curling shot just before the break to give Villa the lead; however, the cushion didn't last long for the hosts, as Matheus Cunha equalised in extra time to ensure both teams headed into the break on level terms at 1-1.
Despite missing several key players, including the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matthijs de Ligt and Amad Diallo due to various reasons, United controlled the game in the first half. However, an injury to captain Bruno Fernandes at the start of the second half saw them lose the plot.
Fernandes' injury resulted in manager Ruben Amorim substituting the midfielder with defender Lisandro Martinez at the start of the second half. United didn't look as imposing in the second half as Morgan once again beat defender Leny Yoro on the right flank to score from another curling effort in the 57th minute, handing Villa a 2-1 lead.
The goal proved decisive as Villa managed to hold on to the lead to secure all three points. Meanwhile, Fernandes' injury added to United's woes, who were without six senior players due to a combination of injuries, suspension and national duty for the AFCON. Youngsters Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey made their debuts as substitutes in the game, highlighting United's issues.
While it was yet another disappointing night for Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, it was elation for Villa boss Unai Emery, whose side managed to get crucial three points despite not being on top of their game. With the victory, Villa remain in the third spot on the Premier League table with 36 points after 17 matches.
Emery's men are in the title race as they are only three points behind league leaders Arsenal, who will head into Christmas with 39 points from 17 games. Manchester City are in the 2nd spot and are following Arsenal closely with 37 points from 17 games.
Emery lauded Morgan, who is spearheading Villa's title challenge this season and is the club's top scorer with 7 goals so far in the Premier League 2025-26. Morgan has scored four of his seven goals in Villa's last two matches in the league.
"He's a fantastic guy and a fantastic player because he loves football. Morgan loves work. He's a hard worker and he's increasing his level professionally to a high level," said the Villa manager.
"He started the season not getting numbers but doing well, always showing his attitude and he scored goals," he added.
