Barcelona midfielder Pedri ruled out for one month with hamstring injury

New Delhi: Barcelona's star midfielder Pedri will be sidelined for one month after sustaining a hamstring injury during the team's thrilling 4-2 Champions League win against Slavia Prague on Wednesday, January 21.

Pedri had been a crucial player for the La Liga toppers in the matches. He provided an assist for Fermín López's opening goal against Slavia Prague before limping off in the 61st minute during the opponent's counterattack.

This setback comes at a challenging time for Hansi Flick's Barcelona, who sit in the first position of the La Liga table and have also qualified for the Champions League knockout stages. They now have a congested schedule, including matches against Copenhagen, Real Oviedo in the Copa del Rey, and league games against Elche, Girona, and Mallorca.

Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that medical tests revealed a right hamstring injury, ruling out the 23-year-old midfielder until late February.

"Tests conducted this morning have confirmed that first team player Pedro González "Pedri" has a right hamstring injury, which he picked up during the game against Slavia Prague yesterday. The recovery time is expected to be one month," Barcelona said in a statement.

He had already missed five games earlier in this season due to hamstring issues and a calf problem. Hansi Flick after the Champions League match had said that Pedri's injury was not a good news for the team.

"I don't know what he has exactly, but it's the hamstring. It is what it is. Sometimes these things happen. I don't know how long he will be out. It's not good news," Flick said.

Barcelona registered a huge victory against Slavia Praha in the Champions League on Wednesday, which has bolstered their chances to finish in the top eight ahead of the knockout stages. They are currently placed 9th in the table with 13 points, and will take on Danish club FC Kobenhavn at home on the last match day.
