New Delhi: Aston Villa have agreed on a deal to sign midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus, reports The Athletic. The deal also includes an option to buy the Brazilian international for the Premier League club for €25 million (£21.7 million) plus add-ons at the end of the season, which will end his current contract with Nottingham Forest.
Luiz has undergone the final parts of a medical on Wednesday, ahead of completing the transfer. The midfielder will return to Aston Villa after making 200 appearances for the English club between 2019 and 2024. According to The Athletic report, Chelsea were also interested in a loan move for Luiz, but stopped pursuing after an initial enquiry.
Villa have limited options in the midfield, and the club is considering options with Youri Tielemans sidelined for an extended period after sustaining an ankle injury in the second half of their victory over Newcastle United on Sunday.
Boubacar Kamara has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while skipper John McGinn will be out for at least six weeks. Luiz has made only eight appearances for Nottingham Forest on loan from Serie A club Juventus.
He moved to Italy from Aston Villa for €50million plus €1.5m in add-ons in the 2024 summer transfer window, but struggled to make a start in his first season, playing 90 minutes only two times.
Aston Villa are currently placed in the third position with 46 points in the Premier League table, and are on the same points as second-placed Manchester City, after 23 matches. Arsenal is currently leading the title race with 50 points in 23 games.
Aston Villa have also signed striker Tammy Abraham from Besiktas in a deal worth £18.2m. He returned to the club after spending the 2018/19 season on loan at Villa Park. He helped the English club to earn promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
