Carlos Alcaraz shows remarkable resilience; battles injury, pain to win on Tokyo debut

Carlos Alcaraz, who regained the number one ATP ranking after winning the U.S. Open earlier this month, called a medical timeout at 2-2 in the first set after injuring his left foot, but stunningly overcame the setback.

New Delhi: World number one Carlos Alcaraz made a dramatic debut at the Tokyo Open, surviving a massive injury scare en route to the opening round win in Japan's capital. Alcaraz looked in deep trouble after suffering a foot injury in the first set, but showed remarkable resilience to overcome the setback and beat Argentina's Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-2 to progress to the second round of the ATP 500 event.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, who regained the number one ATP ranking after winning the U.S. Open earlier this month, called a medical timeout at 2-2 in the first set after jarring his left foot during a rally with the Argentinian pro.

Alcaraz returned to the court with heavy strapping but played through pain, breaking Baez to take a 5-4 lead before serving out the set.

Alcaraz extends remarkable ATP run with sensational win

If the timeout delayed the proceedings in the opening set, rain suspension stopped the match in the second. The rain delay helped Alcaraz to take a rest and gave his injury some extra time to heal, and it was all the Spaniard needed. The six-time Grand Slam champion breezed past Baez without facing a break to finish off the contest in an hour and a half.

The victory helped Alacarz extend his sensational run of form, improving his season record to 63-7, with 48 wins in his last 51 matches.

"I was scared. I'm not going to lie. I felt my ankle and did not feel great. I'm just happy to be able to play after that," Alcaraz said after the match.

Meanwhile, world number two Jannik Sinner stormed to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Croatia's Marin Cilic as he began his quest for a second China Open title in Beijing.

The Italian took an hour and 21 minutes to beat the 36-year-old Croatian, a two-time finalist in the Chinese capital. Sinner, 24, had won the title in Beijing on debut in 2023 before losing the final in last year’s edition.
