New Delhi: Taylor Fritz shocked top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 as Team World took a commanding 9-3 lead over Team Europe in the Laver Cup ahead of final day's action.
Fritz displayed versatility as he lead 3-1 in the opening set, delighting the crowd with some handy racquet play at the net to claim the first set. The American then proceeded aggressively towards his first win against the Spaniard in four meetings.
In the second set, he moved ahead 3-2 with a break, which frustrated the US Open champion Alcaraz as he screamed his frustration. But Alcaraz was unable to counter Fritz's big serve.
"The three times that I've played Carlos, he's broken me in the first game... so getting out of that first game was huge," Fritz said after his win.
"I was playing a lot of the big points with conviction, I didn't second guess myself and I didn't play too safe. I played with no fear."
Team World received a boost when Alex De Minaur and Alex Michelsen defeated Casper Ruud and Holger
Rune 6-3 6-4 to stretch their lead.
Australia's De Minaur had beaten Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-4 on Saturday, to register his third victory over the German in 11 career clashes.
"It's a part of my game that I've definitely unlocked over the last two years ... these guys, they hit the ball so hard and so big," said De Minaur.
"I've got to find different ways to hurt them. I've got the ability to use my speed not only to retrieve but also sneak into the net. The more I do it the more comfortable I feel, the more points I win, and the more dangerous I become."
