Former India captain Virat Kohli's brother Vikas Kohli appeared to have taken a sly dig at India head coach Gautam Gambhir amid the Indian team's horror show in the ongoing 2nd Test against South Africa in Guwahati. Vikas shared a post on the social media platform Threads, where he questioned the performances of the current Indian team.
Vikas pointed out how India used to play to win Test matches in overseas conditions, but the team is now 'playing to save the match, even in India'. In his post, he also blamed someone who, according to him, is trying to 'boss around and change things' that were not broken.
Fans were quick to point out that Kohli's brother Vikas is blaming Gambhir, who has failed to replicate his white-ball success in Tests ever since taking over as the head coach of the Indian team last year. Under Gambhir, India suffered their first home Test series defeat in 12 years, when they lost 0-3 to New Zealand last year.
"There was a time that we played to win even in overseas conditions… Now we are playing to save the match…even in India.. This is what happens when u try to boss around and change things unnecessary which were not broken…," Vikas wrote in his post on Threads, which has now been deleted.
In another post, which has now been deleted, Vikas also raised questions regarding India's selection policy. He pointed out how India have no proper batters at no. 3, 4 and 5 and have played all all-rounders, while South Africa have a 'proper Test team' with specialist batters, bowlers and spinners.
His post came after India's struggles in the ongoing Test series against South Africa at home. India lost the first Test in Kolkata by 30 runs and are on the verge of facing a second successive defeat in the second Test at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati after ending Day 4 on 27/2 in pursuit of a huge target of 549 runs in their second innings.
After bowling out India for a paltry 201 runs in their first innings to amass a huge lead of 288 runs, South Africa continued their domination with the bat in their second innings. The Proteas rode on a fabulous knock of 94 runs from Tristan Stubbs to post 260/5 in their second innings (declared), extending their lead to 548 runs.
South Africa set an imposing target of 549 runs for India, which is near-impossible for the hosts to chase. India will be hoping to play out throughout the day to secure a draw in the Test match and avoid a 2-0 clean sweep in the series. Gambhir will become the first Indian head coach to suffer two Test series whitewashes at home if South Africa clean sweep India 2-0 in the ongoing series.
