Abhishek Sharma surpasses Suryakumar Yadav to script massive T20I world record

In merely 4.5 overs, the Indian openers scored 52 quick runs when lightning halted play in the series-decider on November 8.

New Delhi: Flamboyant Indian batter Abhishek Sharma continued his fiery run in the fifth and final T20I against Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane on Saturday. After India were put into bat first by the hosts, Abhishek along with Shubman Gill started off the innings on an explosive note giving the visitors a solid start.

In merely 4.5 overs, the Indian openers scored 52 quick runs when lightning halted play in the series-decider on November 8. At the time when play was stopped at the venue, Abhishek had scored 23 runs off just 13 balls while Gill had scored 29 runs off 16 deliveries. Enroute his knock, the left-hander surpassed fellow player and skipper Suryakumar Yadav for a massive record in T20Is.

Abhishek became the fastest player to score 1000 T20I runs in terms of balls faced from a full-member nation. The record was held by Suryakumar, who had completed 1000 T20I runs in 573 balls while Abhishek achieved the landmark in just 528 deliveries. In the top-5 list, these two are the only Indian players.

Fewest innings to 1000 T20I runs (India)

Meanwhile among the Indian players, Abhishek surpassed KL Rahul to occupy the second spot in the list of the Indian players who have taken fewest innings to reach 1000 runs in T20Is. Virat Kohli leads the elite list as the veteran batter has achieved the landmark in 27 innings while Abhishek achieved the landmark in his 28th T20I innings.
