New Delhi: Being ignored from the international assignments did not deter Mohammad Shami from performing brilliantly in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Shami, who last featured for India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, has been kept out of the national side for quite some time now due to his form and injury concerns.
After picking up an injury in the later half of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami was on rehabilitation for almost entire 2024 season, wanting to participate for Team India but recovery took a bit long. Shami, who last played for India in the whites at the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2023 against Australia, has since not appeared in the Tests.
Meanwhile, ahead of the South Africa home series next month, Shami has sent a very strong message to all the selectors in the BCCI with a five-wicket haul for Bengal which helped them beat Gujarat in Ranji Trophy. Shami finished the second innings with figures of 5/38 as the side registered a big 141-run victory over Gujarat. The right-arm pacer had taken three wickets earlier in the first innings.
So far in the two matches played for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, Shami has claimed a total of 15 wickets which personifies his capability and form in the red-ball format. Bengal secured a dominant win over Gujarat in their Elite Group C Ranji Trophy match at the Eden Gardens. Their win was set up by a sensational batting performance and brilliant bowling spells, with all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed and veteran seasoned Shami being the standout performers.
With the South Africa home series starting next month and comprising Tests, ODIs and T20Is, Shami stands a fair chance to be included considering his recent performance. Meanwhile, India are currently in Australia for a white-ball series in which they went down in the ODI series 1-2 while are getting geared up for a five-match T20I series.
