New Delhi: Australia have suffered a big injury scare ahead of the Ashes 2025 opener in Perth as skipper Steven Smith got hit on his wrist. During a net practice session in the stadium on Tuesday, Smith while polishing his batting skills, got hit on his wrist severely, mentions a report on the Times of India.
The report further mentions that the extent of the injury was not known until the physios came on to the field to assist him. Upon ascertaining, it was learnt that the extent of the injury is not bad enough that will keep him out of the first Test match against England. After being attended, he returned to the field and was again seen batting which indicates his participation for the series opener on Friday.
Ashes, the biggest cricketing rivalry in history, begins on November 21 with the fifth and final Test match scheduled to take place from January 4 2026 to January 9 in Sydney. The Gabba in Brisbane, Adelaide Oval and Melbourne Cricket Ground would be the other three venues for the highly-anticipated series apart from Perth and SCG.
With regular skipper Pat Cummins out of the series opener due to an injury, stand-in captain Smith would be at the helm of the affairs at Perth. Smith holds an incredible record in the Ashes as in 37 Test matches, the star player has scored closed to 3500 runs with 12 centuries and 13 half-centuries to his name.
In the last Test match at the Optus stadium in Perth, Australia's experience turned out to be quite challenging as they suffered a heavy 295-run defeat against India in the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The hosts would aim to erase that memory with a victory against the English side.
In the last Ashes back in 2023, when Australia was in England, the five-match Test series was drawn after both the sides won two matches each with the remaining one ending a draw.
