New Delhi: Bangladesh have insisted on a zero tolerance policy misconduct and formed an investigation committee to probe complaints of sexual harassment on women cricketers.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board was forced to act after Jahanara Alam accused former seamer Manjurul Alam of sexually harassing her during the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand.
Several similar complaints have surfaced from former female cricketers too prompting the BCB to form an investigation to committee to look into the serious accusations of misconduct.
Retired Justice of Bangladesh Supreme Court Tariq ul Hakim has been named the convener of the committee, while new BCB director Rubaba Dowla and senior advocate Sarwat Siraj Shukla are among the members.
BCB president Aminul Islam promised strict action if accusations are proved following the investigation, which required time to get to the bottom of the truth.
"You've asked a question, and here's my reply - zero tolerance. Thank you," Aminul said in response to a question, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
BCB's director of the facilities committee Shanian Taneem said none will escape punishment irrespective of status and level of employment.
"Well, whether it's an employee or a director, there's an investigation committee that is responsible for making decisions. Since the committee has already been formed, we are dependent on their decision because as a cricket board director or even as president, we are not entitled to take any decisions independently," Shanian said.
"If the inquiry committee tells us tomorrow that four employees need to be placed on special duty (OSD), we will do so. At the same time, since you mainly want to hear about the directors - because that's what's being implied - the decision is theirs. When they conduct the investigation, it will cover everyone involved. It's not as if they'll spare any director."
Former captain and BCB vice-president Faruque Ahmed has been admitted in a Dhaka hospital following a cardiac arrest.
He was rushed to the hospital after experiencing severe chest pain around noon on Sunday to undergo angiogram and insertion of stent.
"He was feeling unwell since last night. This afternoon, he was taken to hospital. After an angiogram, a blockage was found in his heart, and doctors inserted a ring in the evening. Now he is in the CCU," a BCB official told Daily Sun.
