The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will review the performance of the India U19 team in the recently concluded U19 Asia Cup 2025. Ayush Mhatre-led India missed out on the title after suffering a crushing 191-run defeat in the final against Pakistan on Sunday.
India suffered a terrible batting collapse in the summit clash while chasing a huge target of 348 runs as they were skittled out for a paltry 156 runs in just 26.2 overs. Star batters Mahtre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to deliver as they were both dismissed cheaply in the chase. While Mhatre managed only 2 runs off 7 balls, Suryavanshi was dismissed after scoring a rapid 10-ball 26.
As per Cricbuzz, BCCI took the decision of conducting a review of the U19 team's performance during an Apex Council meeting on Monday (December 22). The members discussed the team's overall performance in the tournament and felt a review was needed after their abysmal defeat in the final against Pakistan.
As per Cricbuzz, BCCI is planning to hold discussions with the Indian U19 team head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre as part of the review. The move is a surprising one as it goes beyond the normal review process. The BCCI will also seek a report from team manager Salil Datar, which is a standard practice.
BCCI's decision to review the team's performance comes amid accusations from Pakistan head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed that the Indian players were 'disrespectful' on the field didn't conduct themselves well during the game. However, it is not known whether the players behaviour during the final against Pakistan will be a part of discussions during the review process.
As per Cricbuzz, the BCCI has decided to review the team's performance in the U19 Asia Cup to ensure all issues in the squad are addressed ahead of the ICC U19 World Cup 2026, which is set to take place in January-February next year.
The BCCI might have also been influenced by the drop in the standards for the India U19 team in the last couple of years. India are the most successful team in the history of the tournament, having won eight titles. However, they have failed to win the U19 Asia Cup since 2021. India lost the final of the last edition of the tournament against Bangladesh, before losing to Pakistan this year.
