The Indian Premier League (IPL)'s brand valuation has taken a big hit once again in 2025. IPL's overall valuation has fallen by 20%, while most franchises, including the top ones have also witnessed a sharp decline in their valuation. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the reigning champions and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are among the worst hit, having witnessed a decline in double digits.

As per Brand Finance's IPL 2025 report, the cash-rich league's valuation stood at $9.6 billion in 2025, a 20 percent decline from 2024. The report claimed that the decline in valuation was caused due to significant disruptions during the tournament last season.

IPL 2025 was suspended for a week due to escalated tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, which halted the momentum of the tournament, which played a role in the decline. There were other factors also responsible for the drop in brand value, including fading sponsorship money after the ban on real-money gaming apps in the country.

Brand value of almost all IPL franchises drop

As per the report, the brand value of nearly every IPL franchise dropped in 2025 owing to multiple reasons. RCB witnessed a 10 per cent decline in their brand value despite winning their maiden IPL title earlier this year after beating Punjab Kings in the final. RCB owners have reportedly put the team on sale and are in talks with prospective owners.

Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings, the most successful team in IPL history and one of the most highly valued franchises, witnessed a sharp decline of 24% in their valuation. The drop in valuation was a result of CSK's struggles on the pitch in IPL 2025. The franchises endured a dismal campaign and finished at the bottom of the table last season.

Rajasthan Royals were the worst hit, with their brand valuation dropping by 35 per cent in 2025. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders also witnessed a sharp decline as their valuation dropped by 34 per cent and 33 per cent, respectively. Delhi Capitals' valuation fell by 26%, while five-time champions Mumbai Indians saw their valuation decline by 9% in 2025.

Despite being the most searched team on Google and creating waves with their performances in IPL 2025, the Punjab Kings also witnessed a 3 per cent decline in their brand value. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants' brand value dropped by 2 per cent. Gujarat Titans were the only team to witness an increase in their brand value as they recorded a moderate jump of 2 per cent.

"IPL 2025 reflects a period of course correction, positioning the league to regain momentum and strengthen its long-term brand value," said the report.

Despite the 9% drop, the Mumbai Indians remain the most valued team at $108 million, followed by RCB, who are valued at $105 million despite the 10% drop in their valuation. Chennai Super Kings, valued at $93 million, are the third-most valued IPL franchise at present.

Ban on real-money gaming apps affects IPL

The decline in IPL's overall valuation is also due to the fading of advertisement and sponsorship money from the tournament. The Indian government's ban on real-money gaming apps adversely affected IPL as the likes of Dream11 and MyTeam11, which were among the league's biggest sponsors, had to pull out of their respective contracts.

The ban on the real-money gaming apps has reportedly led to a loss of around Rs 1500-2000 crore in sponsorship money from the IPL ecosystem. Despite traditional brands taking over their places, the gap in terms of monetary valuation is too hard to fill.
