New Delhi: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday said that a decision on allowing the Indian Premier League ( IPL) 2026 matches at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy stadium would be taken after discussing it in Thursday's Cabinet meeting.
Speaking to the media after meeting the newly-elected president of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Venkatesh Prasad, Shivakumar said that the Karnataka government has no intention of stopping cricket matches at the famous Chinnaswamy stadium but they bound about thinking of the crowd control measures.
Additionally, the deputy CM said that they also have to incorporate the suggestions of the Michael D Cunha committee to which president Prasad has also agreed. He further said that their government is fully committed towards restoring cricket in the stadium and meet the demands of the cricket fans but without denting the reputation of the state.
Speaking on his meeting with the KSCA members including Prasad, the deputy CM said that they have insisted for the government's cooperation in the matter and the government is fully committed towards not allowing the IPL matches to shift out of the city.
Lauding his government, he said that they have come forward to build new stadiums in the city and they need full support from KSCA as he believes that's its only the unity that can pull this off in a great manner. He wished Prasad and his members, which include former bowlers Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble best of luck in their efforts. Prasad also described the meeting positive and fruitful.
The Bengaluru stadium made the headlines earlier in the year when number of fans were killed and many injured in a stampede which took place during RCB's maiden IPL title celebration in the city. Since then, not even a single match has taken place in the stadium.
