New Delhi: Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur led a terrific fightback as India ended up posting a solid score of 269/8 in the women's ODI World Cup opener against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. In the rain-curtailed ODI, which was reduced to 47 overs per side, Sri Lanka pushed India against the wall with big wickets bit both Deepti and Amanjot combined together to rescue the side which was reeling at 124/6.
While Amanjot scored 57 runs off 56 balls including 5 boundaries and a lone six, Deepti with a score 53 in as many played an impactful knock for the Women in Blue after a terrible middle-order collapse. Sneh Ran remained unbeaten on 28 runs off just 15 balls playing a quick cameo for the side and helping India women cross the 250-run mark.
Earlier in the innings, opener Pratika Rawal scored 37 runs while Harleen Deol got out on 48 remaining 2 runs short of a half-century. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur failed to showcase her prowess as she was dismissed after scoring just 21 runs while Lankans managed to get rid of star batter Smriti Mandhana for just 8 which was a big wicket for them and massive blow to India. Jemimah Rodrigues went back to the pavilion for a duck.
For Sri Lanka, Inoka Ranaweera proved to be the star bowler with 4 wickets while Udeshika Prabodhani claimed two scalps. Achini Kulasuriya and captain Chamari Athapaththu claimed a wicket apiece. With DLS coming into effect, Sri Lanka need to chase 271 runs to win the encounter and begin their campaign on a high. Earlier, the match was halted for nearly 80 minutes due to torrential rain in Guwahati.
