East Bengal football club has confirmed that it will felicitate India's World Cup winners Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma for their contributions in India's historic victory. Richa and Deepti were among the heroes of India's successful campaign, playing a key role in the team's maiden Women's ODI World Cup triumph.
Deepti bagged a five-wicket haul in the final as India thrashed South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai last week to lift the elusive trophy. The all-rounder earlier scored a crucial half-century with the bat to help India post a match-winning total of 298 runs in the summit clash.
Deepti bagged the Player of the Tournament award in the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup for her sensational all-round performance. The Indian all-rounder finished as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 22 wickets, while notching up 215 runs, including a brilliant 58-run knock in the final.
Richa, on the other hand, flourished in the finisher's role for India and produced several impactful cameos for the team down the order. The wicket-keeper batter amassed 235 runs in the tournament at an average of 39.16 and had the best strike rate of 133.52, among batters with 100 or more runs. She also slammed the joint-most sixes (12) in the tournament.
Both players, who have represented Bengal in domestic cricket, will be felicitated by East Bengal for their role in India's historic maiden World Cup triumph. The ceremony will be organised at a time which is mutually convenient for both cricketers. East Bengal's president, Murali Lal Lohia, wrote letters to both Richa and Deepti, congratulating them on India's victory.
In his letter, Lohia highlighted both cricketers' impact on women's cricket in Bengal and lauded them for their inspiring journeys. While Richa plays for Bengal, Deepti played for the state team from the 2017-18 to 2023-24 season, before returning to Uttar Pradesh.
"Your long and distinguished association with Bengal stands as a testament to your deep roots and your commitment to nurturing Bengal's sporting legacy," Lohia wrote in his letter to Deepti.
"Your journey from our home state to the world stage is truly inspirational, especially for countless young girls who aspire to excel in sports," Lohia wrote to Richa.
