New Delhi: England brought in Josh Tongue for Gus Atkinson in their bowling attack for the third Ashes Test that is set to role out in Adelaide from Wednesday.

The tourists made only one like-for-like change for the match where they have to avoid a loss to prevent a series defeat with two matches of the series to spare.

England lost both the first two Tests by eights wickets, inside two days in the opener in Perth, and under four days in the day-nighter in Brisbane.

Seamer Atkinson couldn’t claim a wicket in in Perth though he score 37 runs in the second innings, following it up with figures of three for 151 in Brisbane.

Right-armer Tongue has picked up 31 wickets in six Tests at an average of 30 and claimed five wickets in his only previous match against Australia at Lord's in 2023.

If England are unable to win at the Adelaide Oval, they would have to relinquish all hopes of regaining the Ashes and despite poor performance of their batters, they decided against making any changes in the batting line-up.

England team: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue.

Lyon ready

Nathan Lyon is keen to shed his disappointment at being dropped for a home match for the first time in 14 years in Brisbane and is keen to return with a bang at a ground he is familiar with.

He and skipper Pat Cummins are expected to be named the playing XI on Wednesday, where the 38-year-old was part of the ground staff before becoming one of Australia's most successful spinners.

"Every opportunity that there's a test match on, I want to be a part of, I love playing cricket," Lyon said on Monday.

"So there was a lot of disappointment, but there's no point looking back now, we're looking forward and moving on, and looking at what my role looks like this week.

"I haven't really had the opportunity to get my teeth into this test series yet, but that opportunity will hopefully come soon, and we'll put it into play."
