England players of Pakistan-origin get visas for T20 World Cup

New Delhi: Pakistan-origin cricketers of England and several other countries have received visas for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka after efforts of International Cricket Council.

A total of 42 players and officials of Pakistan origin are bound for the T20 World Cup and ICC facilitated completion of visa formalities for them.

Canada’s staff member Shah Saleem Zafar, members of the Netherlands squad including Zulfiqar Saqib, USA’s Ali Khan and Shayan Jahangir have also received clearance.

Players and officials of Pakistan nationality or origin in United Arab Emirates, USA, Italy, Bangladesh and Canada are in line to receive visas in the coming days for the tournament that will stretch from February 7 to March 8.

Appointments have been fixed in next week for these teams as deadline for visa issuance remains on January 31.

Considering the diverse representation of players of Pakistani descent across teams, visa clearances are viewed as an important early step for teams to be in full strength.

ICC has been proactive to ensure that cricketers, officials and standby personnel across multiple teams don’t face any late complications before the top-level event as India visa applicants from Pakistan origin usually attract greater scrutiny and takes longer time than usual to get processed.

ICC has maintained constant communication with Indian High Commissions in multiple cities across continents to oversee the coordination process, pre-empting bottlenecks and avoiding procedural delays.

As per the report, ICC has been assured that pending cases will be processed smoothly within the stipulated timelines.
