New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders broke the bank for star Aussie player Cameron Green at the IPL mini-auction 2026 in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. Green was signed for a whopping price of Rs 25.20 crore by the KKR franchise after they engaged in a big battle over the star player with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
After the Super Kings pulled out of the fight, Green went to the Knight Riders as the most expensive overseas player in the history of the cash-rich league and the third-most expensive overall in IPL, behind Rishabh Pant (27 crore) and Shreyas Iyer (26.75 crore). In the overseas list, Green surpassed Mitchell Starc who was the previous highest overseas player Rs 24.75 crore at the IPL 2024 auction.
While Green dominated the first set with a mammoth deal, the other player to get a franchise was David Miller, who was sold at his base price of Rs 2 crore to Delhi Capitals. Rest of the players in the opening set remained unsold. Despite bagging a gigantic deal of Rs 25.20 crore, Green would not be taking the entire amount home as the Aussies star will only get Rs 18 crore out of the total Rs 25.20 crore.
As per the regulations put in force by the IPL governing council, overseas players can earn a maximum of Rs 18 crore from the IPL mini-auction regardless of how much a franchise pushes the bidding. If a player manages to get a deal beyond the stipulated amount, his final salary will remain capped and the remaining amount thus goes into the BCCI account with the money being utilised for player welfare.
Though Green bagged a deal of Rs 25.20 crore, he will pocked just Rs 18 crore and the remaining amount of 7.20 crore will go into the account of the Indian cricket board. This rule comes into force as the franchises are ready to spend crores of rupees on a particular player and also to ensure that an overseas player does not get an big pay package.
The capping was introduced by the BCCI at last-year's mega auction 2025 and has been applied to all mini-auctions as well. This rule matches the highest retention slab from the last mega-auction keeping the overseas salary capped.
