New Delhi: India still have three months to reach their optimum level at the T20 World Cup, insists head coach Gautam Gambhir after acknowledging his team is not where its "wants to be".
In a 46-second teaser of his interview on 'bcci.tv', Gambhir also spoke about the importance of fitness to be in the scheme of things for the 20-over show-piece event.
"It has been a very transparent dressing room, it has been a very honest dressing room and that is how we want this dressing room to be. I think we still aren't where we want to be come the T20 World Cup," he said.
"Hopefully guys know the importance of being fit. We still have three months to be where we want to be," he added.
Defending champions India and Sri Lanka are set to host the T20 World Cup in February-March next year, as Gambhir reiterated his philosophy of testing character of players through tough assignments.
"Throw guys in the deep sea, as simple as it can get. We did the same with Shubman (Gill) as well when he was appointed as Test captain," he said.
Skipper Temba Bavuma joined South Africa's Test squad in Kolkata for their opening match against India from Friday after being part of the South Africa A side in an unofficial Test series in Bengaluru.
The visiting team arrived in batches with head coach Shukri Conrad, pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, and those players who were part of the team’s white-ball series in Pakistan reaching on Sunday morning.
"Bavuma, along with another player and a few officials, arrived this morning from Bengaluru. Most of the squad including the head coach had already checked in on Sunday,," the team's local manager told PTI.
"So, South Africa now have their full contingent in. There's no activity scheduled at the Eden (Gardens) today... Most likely, both teams will have their first training session on Tuesday."
