New Delhi: Former India pacer and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has come in defence of Shubman Gill saying that his current form in the T20Is is not worrying. In the first two matches against South Africa in Cuttack and Mullanpur respectively, Gill experienced failures with scores 4 and 0.
While much was expected from the Indian vice-captain, he failed to execute his skill sets and showcase his exemplary talent in the shortest format of the game. Meanwhile Nehra said that all the people should refrain from passing any judgement on Gill who is one of the finest batters in the Indian cricket team and a judgement should not be based on the performance in just two matches.
He further said that writing him off after a couple of outings only in the volatile T20 format reflects on the increasing human tendency of arriving at quick conclusions which is a bad practice. Looking at the statistics, in the last 10 games in T20Is, Gill has just scored 181 runs at a strike rate of below 140 which happens to be quite below his standard.
Nehra who has been a close observer of the right-hander as the Titans head coach for the past two seasons, said that he is not worried at all even with the IPL just 3 months away. Responding to a query by news agency PTI, Nehra said that even if the IPL would have been three weeks away, he wouldn't have been worried considering the T20 format which is very fast-paced and where things can change any moment.
The former India player also feels that the fundamental problem with criticism in the country is reaching a conclusion on the basis of the numbers alone, which is not the right way. Meanwhile, India and South Africa lock horns in the third match in Dharamsala on Sunday.
