New Delhi: South Africa were solidly placed at Lunch on the first day of the second Test match against India in Guwahati. India had picked a wicket in the opening session of the day while managing another one in the second session as the Proteas reached 156 for 2 at the end of Session 2.
With just one session remaining in the opening day, the visitors would be aiming to further solidify their position and ensure no loss of wicket while India would be aiming to give more blows to the visiting team. Skipper Temba Bavuma was on 36 runs while Tristan Stubbs looked firm on a score of 32 of 82 balls.
Earlier in the day, spin magician Kuldeep Yadav picked up the wicket of Ryan Rickelton (35) who was caught behind by captain Rishabh Pant early in the second session but the South Africans managed to rebuild from there on. Both Bavuma and Stubbs forged a solid 74-run partnership as India kept looking for wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah gave India the first breakthrough by cleaning up Aiden Markram for 38 runs. Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar all went wicketless in the first two sessions of the day.
Meanwhile, South Africa are ahead in the two-match Test series after emerging triumphant in the series opener at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Proteas won a Test match in India after 15 years as the last time they had defeated India was way back in 2010.
While the visitors would be hoping to win the second and final Test as well to register a series sweep over the hosts and India would also strive hard for a victory in the game so as to save the series. Pant is leading the Indian team in this Test match after Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a neck spasm.
