Highest individual score in Tests: Brian Lara

Lara scored 375 runs in an innings against England which went on to become the highest score until it was broken by Australia's lethal batter Matthew Hayden, who put up a score of 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003.

West Indian legend Brian Lara remains to be a prominent figure in the history of world cricket. Former left-hander Lara, considered to be one of the greatest batters ever produced by West Indies and one of the best in the globe, ruled the cricketing world in the 1990s and early 2000s with his batting prowess and superior technique.

A cricketing maestro with a unique style of batting, which was considered nothing less than remarkable, Lara played a pivotal role for the team during his era helping them win many crucial clashes. In his professional career, Lara has scripted numerous records with the highest individual score in first-class cricket headlining the list. Back in 1994, Lara smashed a score of 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in Edgbaston. Additionally, Lara held the record for scoring the highest number of runs in a single over of a Test match for 18 years until it was overtaken by India's Jasprit Bumrah in 2022.

The West Indian cricketer had scored 28 runs off an over against Robin Peterson of South Africa in 2003, a feat never achieved by any cricketer. He also topped the Test batting rankings on several occasions with his match-winning performance of 153 not out against Australia in Barbados in 1999 rated as the second-best batting performance in the history of the longest format of cricket. This was just next to the record earned by Sir Donald Bradman in Ashes way back in 1937 when he scored 270 runs.

Brian Lara has always been known for his flamboyant batting across the formats. Be it the ODIs or Tests, Lara has been exceptional in both the formats of the game scripting a lot of records in his illustrious career. When it comes to the highest individual score in Test matches, Lara's name features at the top of the elite list with a score of 400 not out. The record was scripted against England back in 2004 and the historic feat continues to unchallenged by any batter.

A decade earlier in 1994, Lara scored 375 runs in an innings against England which went on to become the highest score until it was broken by Australia's lethal batter Matthew Hayden, who put up a score of 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003. Meanwhile, it took Lara just an year to break the record and establish a new feat of 400 runs in Test cricket.

With Lara at the first and third spot and Hayden occupying the second position, Mahela Jayawardene is on the fourth position as he came very close to the record with a knock of 374 against South Africa in 2006. His 277-run knock against Australia back in 1993 is also one of his memorable innings in the Test format. Lara has 34 centuries to his name in Tests which is the highest number by a West Indian batter.
