New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir bagged its first-ever BCCI title with the under-16 team clinching the Vijay Merchant Trophy Plate Group title on Tuesday. J&K u-16 defeated Mizoram by an innings and 182 runs on the third day of the final contest in Surat, earning their first-ever big crown with the side etching their name in the history books.
Jammu and Kashmir won the four-day match with one day to spare on back of a superlative show in both the innings. Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah congratulated the J&K U-16 cricket team on winning the Vijay Merchant Trophy for the first time. Abdullah took to social media handle X and hailed this as a historic victory.
"A historic BCCI title and a dominant victory that reflects the rising cricketing talent of Jammu & Kashmir," said the 'X' handle of the J&K Chief Minister's Office.
J&K managed to take a first innings lead of 300 runs, piling up a mammoth 400 not out in 95.1 overs in response to 100 all out made by the Mizoram side, which chose to bat first in the contest. Skipper Smagey Khajuria led from the front smashing a blistering 102 run-knock off 174 balls for the side which was studded with 15 boundaries and one huge six.
Other than him, Athrav Sharma was also notable with the bat as he smashed an unbeaten knock of 92 in just 137 balls, smashing as many as 17 boundaries and one six enroute. A sensational batting show was followed by an exceptional bowling performance from the J&K side as they were flawless in bundling out Mizoram for a meagre score of 118 in 42.4 overs in the second innings on the third day of the contest.
With the ball for Jammu and Kashmir, Sanil Singh (3/15), Jaskaran Singh (2/8) and Hammaad Firdous (2/22) were exceptional, with Sanil and Jaskaran proving their metal in the first innings as well with three wickets apiece. The Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 Elite competition is being held from January 4-28.
