New Delhi: India lost three wickets in the first session on day 2 of the first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15. The hosts were 138/4 at lunch with Jurel (5*) and Jadeja (11*) still batting in the middle.
Resuming on the overnight score of 37/1, Washington Sundar and KL Rahul played a few good shots in the initial overs on day 2, forging a 57-run partnership for the second wicket. Sundar was removed by Harmer for 29 runs with a good length delivery, which landed on a perfect spot and took a sharp turn. The batter failed to play it on the front foot, as it took the outside edge of the bat and carried to the slip.
Shubman Gill walked off the field due to neck pain after hitting a boundary. KL Rahul completed his 4000 runs in Test cricket but was shortly removed by Keshav Maharaj. He bowls a length delivery which turns sharply off and Rahul looked to defend it, but the ball catches the edge and goes to slip.
Pant looked good in his short stay as he smashed two boundaries and two maximums for his 27 off 24. He also became the batter with the most sixes for India in Test cricket with 91 maximums, surpassing Virender Sehwag (90) and Rohit Sharma (88). Pant was removed by Corbin Bosch with a short-length delivery, which angled into the body, and the wicketkeeper was cramped for room on the pull shot.
Earlier, Marco Jansen dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12 runs on day 1. The left-hander was looking to play the short-length delivery away off the back foot, but he got a thick inside edge and ended up losing his leg stump.
Jasprit Bumrah picked up his 16th five-wicket haul as South Africa bundled out for 159 runs on the opening day after opting to bat first. Apart from Markram, none of the Proteas batters managed to cross the 30-run mark as the Indian bowlers wreaked havoc in the visitors' batting line-up. Bumrah picked up five wickets, while Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav also took two wickets each.
