New Delhi: Senuran Muthusamy scored his maiden century while Marco Jansen missed his by a small margin as they propelled South Africa to a comfortable 489 in their first innings on Day 2 of the second Test against India in Guwahati on Sunday.
Muthusamy's 109 off 206 deliveries with the help of 10 boundaries and two sixes, and Jansen's 93 off with 91 balls with six fours and seven sixes drove India to the ground after South Africa resumed their batting at 247 for six.
In 61. overs at the fag end of the day's action, India were nine for no loss with Yashasvi Jaiswal unbeaten on seven and KL Rahul undefeated in two.
Muthusamy became only the South African batter with a century from No.7 or lower against India, after Quinton de Kock (111 in 2019) and Lance Klusener (102* in 1997).
The left hander added 88 runs for the seventh wicket with Kyle Verreynne (45), who was stumped after advancing down the pitch to Ravindra Jadeja (2/94).
Jansen then joined hands and put on 97 runs with Muthuswamy to consolidate South Africa's positon as Indian bowlers struggled to break through their resolve.
