India slipped below Pakistan to fifth place in the latest ICC Test World Championship 2025-27 standings after suffering a massive 408-run defeat to South Africa in the second Test in Guwahati on Wednesday.

The Gautam Gambhir-coached side, which slumped to their second whitewash at home in 12 months after the 0-2 series loss, has won four matches, lost four and drawn one in the current (2025-27) cycle. This is India's first series loss in the current WTC campaign. With a win percentile of 49.52 and 52 points in nine matches, the two-time WTC finalists have a mountain to climb.

Meanwhile, South Africa, who scripted history by registering their first series win on Indian soil in 25 years, remained second in the table with 36 points from four matches. The reigning WTC champions have lost only once so far, against Pakistan earlier this year.

Australia remain atop the table with four wins in as many games.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer orchestrated India's collapse in the second innings with a six-wicket haul as the Proteas crushed the hosts by 408 runs, as India suffered their biggest loss in terms of runs. The humiliating series loss marks another dark chapter in India's Test history in the last 12 months.

Chasing an improbable 549-run target, Ravindra Jadeja waged a lone battle, scoring an 87-ball 54 as India folded for 140 on the fifth day.

Harmer, who recorded career-best figures of 6/37, finished with a match haul of nine wickets.

Last year in November, New Zealand became the first team to inflict a 3-0 whitewash on India in India. The Asian giants suffered an ignominious loss in the first Test, failing to chase down a 124-run target on Day 3 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
